In its submission to the Higher Education Funding Council for England's (HEFCE's) consultation on 'Ensuring a sustainable supply of pharmacy graduates' the PDA has made a number of proposals for tackling the looming crisis.

In 2010, the PDA undertook a comprehensive strategic review of pharmacist roles and the potential impact their contribution could make on individual patient care and cost efficiency if their skills and accessibility were maximised within the healthcare system. This process took into account not only the views of the pharmacy profession, but also those of patients and the wider healthcare agenda.

Public Support for Decriminalisation of Dispensing Errors

Patients and the public support the decriminalisation dispensing errors. The partners' forum (comprising of pharmacy groups, patients and the public), set up to support the rebalancing programme met on 01/10/13. They agreed with an exemption from criminal sanctions for inadvertent errors.

In England the unacceptable situation where commercially driven agendas involve setting targets for MURs and other services provided by pharmacists has largely arisen because it is the owner of the pharmacy and not the pharmacist that is exclusively recognised by the NHS as the service provider.

PDA launches petition against P meds on self-selection
